May be due to the poison in sulphur.
Like leech dies when salt is sprinkled on it.

I'm not sure but why would they do that? It's cruel and sick. Perhaps look it up on a science forum or something similar.
The smell will drive it away but I am sure that sulphur alone is not enough to kill the snake. Perhaps some water is involved, which reaces to create sulphuric acid - which probably kills it.
